I always remember one of my college professors telling me never to use collage in my art -- that "Collage is not a true art form." that has always stayed with me because collage is now a significant part of my work. I've always been drawn to the layers of texture and interest it brings to a two-dimensional surface. Collage also satisfies my need to design and to feel in control of my materials. Painting -- my first love -- is a lot of reacting to the uncertainty that is inherent in the medium. I think the two provide a nice balance and when combined compliment one another. The controlled and purposefully placed collage elements contrasted with the fluid and organic movement of paint is what I strive to achieve in my art.
